Types of CAS Undergraduate Degrees

The College of Arts and Sciences has six categories of degrees, which are listed in the latest UAA catalog and can be explained by your advisor or a counselor at Advising and Counseling Center . CAS students may earn the following degrees:

  • Associate of Arts,
  • Bachelor of Arts,
  • Bachelor of Science,
  • Bachelor of Liberal Studies,
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts,
  • Bachelor of Music degree.

Each department has specific degrees within these categories, and each degree has its own requirements. See a faculty member in that department about the differences between the degrees that the department offers.

Students interested in the Associate of Arts degree should contact the Advising and Counseling Center .

How to Understand Degree Requirements

To understand degree requirements, meet with a counselor or advisor and carefully read of the appropriate UAA catalog . Students may use the catalog for either the year they declared their majors or the year in which they graduate.

In general, however, all CAS students fulfill university, CAS, and major requirements for the type of degree that they earn. Most degree requirements have prerequisites, courses that must be passed successfully before enrolling, so careful planning is essential.

Most departments have advising tools for students, such as planning checklists and long-term course rotation lists.

Students who experience problems with advising should contact the chair of the department or the CAS Associate Dean for Student & Curricular Affairs (786-1387).

Minors

Undergraduates are strongly encouraged, but not required, to earn a minor as well. Minors help deepen an academic experience and enhance employability. Students may not earn a minor in the department in which they earn a degree.

Check the CAS Departments and Programs chart that is found throughout this site for a list of minors.
