Student Research and Scholarship

College of Arts and Sciences faculty are proud of their students' research and scholarship. The following information describes generally CAS student research and scholarship opportunities. For more specific information, contact the appropriate department or program.

CAS Undergraduate Research

Opportunities are available for undergraduate students interested in research projects. Research projects offer students a more comprehensive experience in understanding a discipline, connect students with working professionals, and often lead to graduate studies.

Research projects are generally sponsored by faculty and carried out by students with close faculty supervision.

Many projects are funded with grants made available through the Honors Program and Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship.Recently, Psychology students studied the frequency of sexual dialogue on television. This research was published in the professional journal, Sexuality & Culture.

CAS Graduate Research

The College of Arts and Sciences offers a number of Master's degree programs for students continuing their education. Teaching assistantships and other research opportunities, such as participating in the Department of English's Pacific Rim Literary Conference and working with Biological Sciences faculty on studies of Alaska's wildlife, are available through individual departments.

Cooperative Graduate Programs

UAA Honors Program

The mission of the UAA Honors Program is to give highly motivated and capable students an opportunity to engage in an intense intellectual experience. Classes are taught by some of UAA's best professors.

UAA Student Showcase

Students, through the sponsorship of a faculty member, may enter the UAA Student Showcase each academic year. Students present their research during a spring conference; winners of each category are awarded cash prizes and may have their work published in the Student Showcase Journal.

University of Alaska Scholars Program

The UA Scholars Program provides an $11,000 scholarship to those qualified Alaska high school seniors who want to attend UAF, UAS, or UAA.

The College of Arts and Sciences houses a number of academic units and institutes for research and creative pursuits.

Natural and Social Sciences Research Facilities

The College's primary research facilities are housed in the Departments of

The Department of Psychology also houses the Psychological Services Center --a center that offers low-cost therapy and counseling to families, couples, and individuals of all ages.

Environmental and Natural Resources Institute (ENRI) is an information and applied research center of the University. Located in downtown Anchorage, its libraries, commissions, and programs focus on Alaska's environment and natural resources.

Fine and Performing Arts Facilities

Fine and performing arts facilities are housed in the Arts Building for the Departments of

The art studio facilities provide space for instruction in computer graphics, drawing, painting, sculpture, 3-D and 2-D design, ceramics, printmaking, and photography.

Theatre facilities include a 230-seat main stage and a 99-seat studio theatre. In addition, there is a complete shop for scenery, costume design, and construction. Dance facilities are housed here and in Building K.

Music facilities include a 200-seat recital hall, a 75-seat rehearsal room, faculty studios, music library, listening room, piano lab, electronic music studio, and student practice rooms.
