The College of Arts and Sciences is the home and heart of the academic tradition at the University of Alaska Anchorage. It provides foundational education in the liberal arts and sciences for all students, as well as undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the humanities, the fine arts, the mathematical, natural, and social sciences. Through teaching, research, scholarship, artistic creativity, and public service, the College contributes to the advancement of knowledge and the betterment of communities in Alaska , the nation, and beyond.

Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences. Our programs in the natural and social sciences, the arts, and the humanities form the core of the academic mission at the University of Alaska Anchorage . We provide the foundational education courses for all students. We instruct in the arts of writing, speaking, and thinking well; in mathematics; in the methodologies and matter of the natural and social sciences; in the study of cultures, stories, ideas, and the human condition; and in the performing and fine arts. The Arts and Sciences aim at educating the whole person, understood as one who learns to continually learn, who acts as an enlightened citizen both globally and locally, and who must navigate a world of moral complexity.

The College of Arts and Sciences serves over 3,200 majors in its various programs. We educate future biologists and historians, philosophers and writers, mathematicians and artists. The College is the home of outstanding researchers and scholars in many fields, whose efforts benefit the State of Alaska and the nation as a whole. Our research programs create opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students to participate in this cutting edge research. Our fine arts programs provide experiences hard to find at other institutions. Our faculty serve the community of Anchorage as members of boards and advisory groups, volunteers, citizens groups, and in providing essential expertise. The College is a leader in service learning which combines academics with service to the community. The College is at the forefront of public debate and conversation on a number of issues vital to our way of life.

Alaska Native Studies

Alaska Native Studies provides the student with: an introduction to Alaska Native ways of knowing and seeing the world, an experiential and theoretical exploration of Alaskan Native cultures a series of critical perspectives on traditional and contemporary Native experiences and politics.

Anthropology

is the study of human diversity on a cross-cultural basis, aimed at achieving both scientific and humanistic education goals. Anthropology is comprised of four sub-fields: sociocultural anthropology, biological anthropology, archaeology, and anthropological linguistics. The BA/BS degrees are designed to provide the student with a solid general foundation in the discipline by emphasizing understanding of different cultures and peoples as well as different theories and methodologies, although there is some opportunity for limited specialization in either archaeology or sociocultural anthropology and in Alaska studies.

Art

Art gives form to human experience; it expresses the entire range of thought and feeling. Affirming the belief that knowledge of the visual arts is an indispensable part of any broad education, the Department of Art offers a wide range of learning experiences designed to encourage independent thinking and creativity, and to develop an appreciation of humankind's artistic achievements from pre-history to the present.

Biological Sciences

The biological sciences, at their essence, deal with the study of life. That study encompasses the origin, history, physical characteristics, life cycle and habits of living things and their habitats, from prions and viruses to whales and old growth forests. Students who major in Biological Sciences may go on to study the migration patterns of birds, become genetic counselors, analyze proteins to synthesize new drug therapies, work in bioethics, become doctors and research the origins of life.

A Master of Science degree is available through the Department of Biological Sciences. A Ph.D. can also be obtained through a joint program with the University of Alaska Fairbanks .

Biomedical Program (WWAMI)

Alaska is one of five northwestern states that participate in WWAMI, a regional medical school. The name comes from the states involved: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. Ten Alaskans per year are admitted to WWAMI through an admission process at the University of Washington School of Medicine. They can complete nearly 3 years of the 4-year program in state.

Chemistry

Chemistry is the science which is concerned with substances- their properties, composition, and reactions. Recent advances in chemistry have exerted a profound influence on the progress of medicine, agriculture, industry, and commerce.

The undergraduate courses in chemistry offered at UAA are designed primarily to provide a broad knowledge of the field as a part of the program of liberal education offered by the College of Arts and Sciences . They are also designed to provide a substantial foundation in chemistry for students interested in post-graduate studies in chemistry or other sciences, preparation for professional degrees, teaching, or a career in government or industry. Students majoring in chemistry will meet basic course requirements in inorganic, analytical, organic, physical chemistry and biochemistry.

Communication

The field of communication, which began more than 2000 years ago with the study and teaching of public communication, has grown to include the study of small group discussion and leadership, interpersonal relationships, family communication, oral interpretation of literature, and intercultural communication to name a few

Creative Writing & Literary Arts

The course of study includes writing workshops, form and theory seminars, and electives. Students are prepared for various careers including those involving professional writing, teaching and editing. Students may take courses in four areas: creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and drama for stage and screen. The emphasis of courses is balanced between the study and practice of craft and the study of form and theory as they relate to style and content. Workshop courses are working courses where students produce original works of literature and engage in productive critiques of each other's writing.

English

The English Department has a complex, diversified mission. Spread geographically over three extended campuses and six extended sites in addition to the main Anchorage campus, we are entrusted with curriculum under the prefixes ENGL and LING, numerous General Education Requirements (including two semesters of composition), a minor, a two-track major (Literature and Rhetoric), and a two-track graduate master's program. We also manage and staff a Writing Center and two English computer classrooms which support our emphasis on enabling our students to achieve success. Our mission is to continue to provide a quality education for our students, and at the same time to engage in the many productive activities such as research, advising, and community outreach which supplement our pursuit of excellence in education.

Environment & Natural Resources Institute

The Environment and Natural Resources Institute (ENRI) provides access to environmental and natural resources information. The institute maintains cooperative links with natural resources libraries and researchers in Alaska , elsewhere in the US and in other circumpolar nations. Through networking and the use of database services and the resource-sharing products, ENRI can quickly tap into virtually any information source relevant to Alaska.

Geography and
Environmental Studies

The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at UAA seeks to understand complex relationships between people and environments, and to help students to develop the skills, concepts, and values needed to uncover and improve these relationships.

Geology

Geology is the study of the earth, its minerals and the processes that effect change on and within it. The Department of Geology offers both a major and a minor. Geology majors can go to study topics such as the retreat of Arctic glaciers, oil and gas exploration in sensitive areas, and the history and topography of the earth.

History

History is the study of what people have done and how they have thought and influenced people. A major and minor in history are offered. Students of history and geography can use their knowledge to become historians, documentary producers, authors, educators and researchers.

International Studies

The International Studies Program prepares students to be global citizens in an increasingly interdependent world. The degree integrates global and comparative courses, language study, and courses focused on a particular area of the world. A major and minors are available.

Journalism & Public Communications

The Department of Journalism and Public Communications is a nationally accredited program that offers courses in journalism, strategic communications, telecommunications and new media. Students who have studied in the department have gone on to be award-winning journalists, public relations professionals, graphic designers and educators. A major and a minor are available.

Liberal Studies

The Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) Program is a new program at UAA.  The BLS degree includes integrated courses in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and natural sciences as well as traditional disciplinary courses. The BLS degree provides students with a rigorous liberal studies program that will prepare them for numerous careers or graduate school

Mathematical Sciences

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Alaska Anchorage includes the disciplines of Mathematics, Applied Statistics, and Computer Science. The department offers a broad-based selection of courses and programs for students who wish to pursue a career in the above fields or who need to increase their knowledge in these areas.

Music

With over 70 active majors, and an internationally recognized music faculty, the UAA Department of Music is a dynamic contributor to the cultural climate in scenic Southcentral Alaska.  UAA is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (N.A.S.M.).

Philosophy

Philosophy is one of the oldest and most enduring academic pursuits, emerging in ancient Greek, Indian, and Chinese civilizations around 600 B.C.E. In Ancient Greece it was at the core of education and, in the formative period of the European university in the Middle Ages, it was central to the very notion of a liberal arts education. It is still considered today to be the exemplary liberal arts degree.

Physics and Astronomy

Understanding the physical world is the basis for all other scientific knowledge. Physicists program computers, design instruments for space exploration, gather and analyze astronomical data, teach physics, design such products for consumer use as medical imaging and liquid crystal display (LCD) devices. The department offers a minor in physics.

Political Science

Politics and government are among the most pervasive organized activities in modern society. They affect everyone, whether as citizen or official, voter or candidate, employee or manager, wealthy land owner or impoverished transient,
The study of political science provides a practical knowledge of the workings of governmental systems from the local to the international level. Students in the department are introduced to the practical values influencing politics and government as well as provided training in political analysis and knowledge of government processes.

Psychology

Phychogy is about understanding the individual person. Thinking, feeling, perceiving, and behavior are examined and their interrelationships explored. The UAA degree provides a broad contemporary exposure to the findings that have emerged from this history of psychological research.

Sociology

Sociology focuses on how social systems, social problems, and human behavior are interrelated.  This discipline looks at the formation, structure, processes, and changes  that occur in groups, systems, organizations and societies.  Since all human behavior is social, the subject matter of sociology is diverse.  Topics include studies of intimate relationships, mob actions, deviant/criminal behavior, religions, cultural practices, and societal attitudes and behaviors that are tied to race, sex, and social class.

Theatre & Dance

The Department of Theatre offers a well-rounded liberal arts approach in its curriculum, with courses covering all the basic areas of theatrical endeavor, including acting, directing, stagecraft, scene design, lighting, costuming, makeup, dramatic literature, theatre history, dramatic theory and criticism, and playwriting.

Women's Studies

Women's Studies courses at UAA foster open, vigorous inquiry about women and gender, challenge curricula in which women are absent or peripheral, question cultural assumptions in light of new information, and create a supportive environment for those interested in studying women and the role of women in society.
